Voluntary Benefits from Colonial Life

Why Disability Insurance?

In most cases, a short-term disability will result in reduced income for you and your family. If you become disabled, how long could you pay bills and provide for your family with reduced earnings? How long will the disability benefit from your employer-sponsored insurance plan last? Do you have enough set aside to cover the additional expenses caused by a disability, maintain your lifestyle and cover everyday living expenses?

More often than we think, many people in today's workforce suffer a short-term disability.

  • Within 10 minutes, 441 people will suffer a disability.
  • 23.2 million disabling injuries were reported in 2004; 3.7 million of those were work related.
  • The cost of unintentional injuries in 2004 was $574.8 billion.

Voluntary Short-Term Disability Insurance (VSTD) is Colonial Life's group disability plan. This plan offers the employer control of benefit plans offered to employees, continuity of coverage and competitive group rates.

Colonial Life's Short-Term Disability Income Protection Insurance is an individual disability plan. With this plan, you (the employee) can choose the plan design that best meets your needs. There is no employer contribution for this plan; the employee pays the premium.

The individual short-term disability plan offers two plan options, a partial disability benefit and higher levels of disability coverage.

Voluntary Short-Term Disability Insurance (VSTD)

VSTD insurance is a group short-term disability plan that provides the following worldwide coverage options:

  • Occupational/non-occupational.
  • Non-occupational only.
  • Partial disability coverage is available.

Colonial Life's VSTD insurance is designed to supplement your existing insurance coverage by replacing from 40 percent to 60 percent of your weekly income if you suffer a short-term disability, depending upon the benefit option selected by your employer. Benefits from the VSTD plan are paid on a weekly basis, up to $1,000 per week. Benefit periods range from four up to 52.

Premiums for the VSTD plan are census-rated and competitive. Plus, with waiver of premium, you will not have to make your premium payments while you are receiving disability benefits from Colonial Life. This results in one less payment for you to make while you are out on disability.

The VSTD plan is offered with guaranteed issue (no health questions) for all employees who enroll during their initial eligibility period. However, pre-existing conditions are excluded.
